Celestial Gatsby-Inspired Wedding at Venue 833 | Editorial Shoot

There is nothing more elegant than a roaring 20s art deco Gatsby-inspired wedding…unless you add a celestial twist to it! With the backdrop of the then brand new Venue 833 in Modesto, California, I knew I had to create something special for this shoot. With a gorgeous black and gold mood color scheme and an out of this world (pun intended!) moodboard, I set off to design stationery that would be equally as stunning.

If you’re new here, my name is Lourdes and I am the creative mind behind Cardsmith Design Studio. I work with couples and other wedding professionals to create visually stunning and timeless invitations with a modern twist. Whether the pieces are for a styled shoot or an actual wedding, I pour my heart into each and every design. Want to collaborate on a styled shoot? Are you engaged and want to find out how you can have wedding stationery that is as unique as what you see here? Reach out and let’s get the conversation started!

The Vision

When I saw the moodboard, I immediately had a vision for the stationery. I wanted to incorporate lots of moons, stars, and metallics all within an art deco style suite. I used the Art Deco Collection suite as the base for this shoot, but added a celestial flair to it. I added a couple constellations, that in my mind, correspond to the couples star signs. I love adding small details that are personalized to the couple in all my designs, so why not star signs?

In order to add a little metallic flair to the invitation suite itself, I added hand painted embellishments to each main star in the constellations. Is it something everyone would notice? Probably not, but small touches like that really enhance the overall design in my opinion.

Another great place to add metallic elements to any suite is in the envelopes. For this suite, I selected a gold RSVP envelope and a black main envelope. For the main envelope, I added the extra touch of metallic gold calligraphy. Can you just imagine receiving an invitation like this back in the roaring 20s to a mansion party hosted by Gatsby himself? I know as a guest, I would be excited to open such a stunning invitation.

In addition to the invitation suite, I also created pieces for the table-scape – two different types of table numbers (I couldn’t pick just one design!) and place cards. For one of the table numbers I leaned into the celestial theme with a midnight black background, a crescent moon accent and the table number in the foreground. For the second design, I went a little more minimal and leaned more into the art deco style of the shoot. This design used similar elements from the invitation suite but brought in some of the metallic elements with the gold backing. I personally like the celestial one more, but which would you choose?

Last, but certainly not least are the place cards. I infused more of the celestial elements with a crescent moon as the primary design element, gold calligraphy names and gold star accents. These were placed at each table setting and would be one of the first things to catch the guests eyes as they sat down to a beautiful reception dinner at such a gorgeous venue.
